Callaghan Valley

Posted by robjwall on November 21, 2010

We had our first day of skiing in Canada today in perfect sunshine on a very cold day in thebig Nordic area Callaghan Valley. To prepare for our visit they hosted a warm-up event earlier this year called The Winter  Olympics . They did a great job, the facilities are amazing, including a big new cafe that lets you bring your own food in…  It was Demelza’a first time on cross-country skis today.  The views on the trails are superb.   I love the way they cross under the road in tunnels so you can ski without interruption.  The atmosphere of the place is very relaxed, and people are extremely friendly and helpful.  Of course it was all paid for by the Olympics, and they are worried they won’t be able to afford to keep the road open once those funds run out.  It was pretty quiet today; certainly compared with what I reckon Whistler Mountain would have been like on the opening weekend.  We will do that soon too.   We are all enrolled on a Wednesday night ski program (under lights) at Callaghan.  Kira and Tarquin are also enrolled in a Monday program at Whistler which is inexpensive and only available to local primary (elementary) school students.

Tonight we had our regular white-water training session with the Squamish Paddling club at the Brennan Park Pool.
